Renewing Their Vows - COCIR and CENELEC Sign Revised Cooperation Agreement

Just as some couples publicly renew their vows after several years of happy marriage, the European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industries (COCIR) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) chose to reiterate their commitment to common objectives by signing – after 13 years of fruitful collaboration – an updated Cooperation Agreement last Thursday, during COCIR’s General Assembly.

Within this globalised society, things move faster every day, and organisations like CENELEC and COCIR have to keep up with the evolution of the market and industry, in particular as regards standardisation of electrical equipment for medical practice and eHealth.

Through this agreement, both organisations wish to strengthen the dialogue between their respective stakeholders in the medical and electromedical arena and thus bring proper answers to the needs of the market, with full respect to European legislation. Not only do they wish to reinforce the dialogue regionally, but they also aim to further promote the implementation of international standardisation work results both in Europe and other regions of the world.

Within this global framework, CENELEC, together with its sister organisations CEN and ETSI, has been promoting a European Standardisation Model, amongst others in China, where COCIR also has established strong partnerships including a China Desk in Beijing.

The Cooperation Agreement signed today will encourage CENELEC and COCIR to further promote the European Standardisation Model, as well as the merits and importance of voluntary standards as a tool to ensure full respect of European legislation and of European industry’s interests.
